Unexpected Adventure: A Cruise to the Bahamas Ends Up in Canada

It’s not every day that a cruise to the sunny Bahamas takes an unexpected detour to the frigid shores of Canada. But that’s precisely what happened to passengers aboard the MSC Meraviglia cruise ship. Initially set to embark on a week-long voyage to the Bahamas, the cruise liner had to change its itinerary due to the impact of a tropical storm in Florida and the Caribbean.

On December 17, the MSC Meraviglia set sail from New York Harbor with 5,624 passengers on board. The original plan was to stop at Nassau, Port Canaveral in Florida, and the cruise company’s private island, Ocean Cay Marine Reserve. However, with the severe rain and flooding in Florida, the cruise liner had to make a quick decision to ensure the safety of its passengers.

Instead of canceling the cruise altogether, MSC decided to head north and explore the charming destinations of New England and Eastern Canada. The revised itinerary included stops in Boston and Portland, Maine, before making its way to Fredericton, New Brunswick on December 21.

Passengers were given the option to either continue with the new itinerary or receive a refund in the form of a credit for a future sailing. MSC explained that the alternative would have been canceling the cruise entirely, which would have disrupted thousands of people’s vacations.
While some passengers chose not to board the ship, others saw it as an opportunity for an unexpected winter adventure. Despite the change in destination, the ship still offered its amenities as scheduled, allowing passengers to make the most of their time on board.

For those caught off guard by the sudden change, it meant a rush to prepare for the colder weather ahead. Lakeya Allen, a resident of Bloomington, Illinois, had to make a last-minute trip to Walmart to buy winter clothing for herself and her three children. “We still have shorts, bathing suits, and sunscreen with us,” she told CNN.

Val Montgomery, another passenger who had been looking forward to visiting the Bahamas, described the ship as “a little depressing” due to the mismatched attire of passengers wearing coats, gloves, and hats. However, many passengers chose to embrace the unexpected adventure and make the most of their time exploring new destinations.

MSC emphasized that the decision to sail to Canada and New England was the most viable option given the circumstances. The complexities involved in arranging last-minute berths and provisioning the ship along the new route made it the best alternative to canceling the cruise entirely.

As the cruise ship made its way through the scenic landscapes of New England and Eastern Canada, passengers experienced a unique winter voyage they hadn’t anticipated. While it may not have been the sunny Bahamas they had initially planned for, the unexpected detour provided an opportunity for new experiences and memories.
